ChangPRESIDENT OF the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Anthony Chang, has been voted onto the Board of Directors of Irish telecoms company Digicel's Jamaican operations.
The announcement was made yesterday at a media appreciation luncheon held at Kingston's Jade Garden restaurant by Digicel's chairman and majority shareholder Denis O'Brien.
Since the company launched its wireless service in April this year, it has managed to sign up almost 200,000 customers with coverage extended to all but 20 per cent of the country.
Speaking to The Gleaner, Mr. Chang said: "It is an honour to join the Board of Directors of a company that has made a substantial investment in Jamaica and has managed to do very well in a relatively short period of time. The telecoms sector is proving to be one of the most competitive and challenging areas in business, with Cable & Wireless, Digicel and now Centennial all fighting it out. I am particularly excited about the new products that Digicel will be launching in the near future."
Digicel paid US$47 million to acquire its wireless licence and utilises the GSM network which is largely favoured in Europe.
