Jamaica Conference of Zion Sabbath Churches

- Norman Grindley

Worship area at Olivet Seventh-Day Church, Spring Village, St. Catherine.

Anthea McGibbon, Religion Feature Co-ordinator

ZION Sabbath Churches from the soils of Jamaica is the newest 'legal' church umbrella group, registering in January 2001 - as the Jamaica Conference of Zion Sabbath Churches (JCZSC).

Some 140 years ago, the first revival church was founded by our black ancestors. This led to a reformation of the traditional revival movement; the church has, since then, according to spokesperson Ricardo Hall, been wrongfully identified as 'Pocomanian'. With 10 churches in six parishes, (photos show four of the 10 churches), the new combined church group is an advocate of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Christ.

The church conducts worship on Saturdays. Emphasising that the Sabbath is the seal of God, the church classifies itself among the remnant church in Bible prophecy. The female members wear turbans as head covering in keeping with church's belief that a woman's head must be fully covered.

Two weeks ago, stalwart revivalist, Bishop Clement Roberts, died in his late 60s. Bishop Clement Roberts founded the Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Church of God, situated in Higgin Town, St. Ann in the early 1960s.
