THE EDITOR, Sir:
This is in response to your report headlined "Councillor says PNP erred in candidate selection" in The Gleaner of February 17, 2002.
In response to Councillor Horne's comments, I would like to state that:
i) Councillor Horne is misguided and misinformed in his assertions;
ii) The PNP is now stronger in St. Elizabeth than at any other time and is confident of winning all four constituencies in the parish as we did in 1993.
The selection process in all eight constituencies in Region 5, St. Elizabeth & Manchester of which I am chairman was completely consistent with and in accordance with the party's constitution and established procedures.
There was full consultation with party members and supporters, and indeed the wider public in the three constituencies in which there was a contest, namely N/W & S/E St. Elizabeth and N/E Manchester.
Those who were successful and whom I confidently expect to be elected Members of Parliament at the next General Elections are Rev. Stanley Redwood, a brilliant young theologian and social technocrat, Mr. Len Blake, a successful entrepreneur and enterprising businessman, and Mrs. Dorothy Miller, entrepreneur and social activist.
Among those who failed to win the support of the people was Norman Horne, son of Councillor Donald Horne in S/E St. Elizabeth.
I hope this is not tainting Councillor Horne's observations.
I am, etc.,
DONALD BUCHANAN
Chairman - PNP Region 5
