Powell lifts Kingston

- Junior Dowie

Junior Stewart of Kensington misses a delivery from leg-spinner Kerry Scott, which went on to bowl him for 51 during their Surrey Senior Cup match against Kingston at Sabina Park yesterday.

THE OPENING day of the fourth round of the 2002 Rothmans Surrey Senior Cup match between Kingston and Kensington produced some superb performances and a thrilling finale is expected today.

Kensington, who were expected to put up a tough fight failed to do so, the visitors were knocked over for 136 in 55 overs; and although they fought back to have Kingston at nine for one at one stage, the game slipped away from them with the home team taking first innings points and being 165 for one at stumps.

Two centuries were scored yesterday, Alex Ranger of Boys' Town scored 116 against Melbourne and Shawn Findlay of St. Elizabeth slammed 150 against Trelawny.

The star at Kingston was discarded Jamaica batsman Ricardo Powell who slammed an undefeated 92 in Kingston's total and appeared to be a knock to impress the Jamaican selectors for the fifth round Busta Cup match against Trinidad and Tobago which starts on Friday.

Powell and Shane Brooks (63) came together with Kingston on nine for one and shared in a second wicket stand of 156.

As expected the aggressor was Powell whose first three scoring shots were boundaries. The hard-hitting batsman got off the mark with a glorious cover drive in the third over off pacer Jason Smith. He then raced to eight when he drove Smith to the long-on boundary in the fifth over and another cover drive in that same over was a remainder of what was to come.

Brooks, who was also severe on the bowlers, faced 127 balls for his 63 and hit 10 boundaries.

Earlier, Junior Stewart (51) top scored for Kensington on a day when his team failed to compete against leg-spinner Kerry Scott who claimed seven wickets for 27 runs.

AT ALPART: St. Elizabeth are in a very position to take first innings points over Trelawny in their Cornwall Senior Cup match.

Scores: St. Elizabeth 300-4 declared (Stanley Findley 150, Kenroy Williams 68, Keron Baker 33 and Lincoln Brown 18; Lorenzo Ingram 2-76). Trelawny 1-1 when badlight stopped play.

AT ELGIN TOWN: Hanover took first innings points from St. James in a low scoring match. Scores: Hanover 150 (Steve Moodie 45; Kevin Wilson 4-29). St. James 141 (Owen Burke 30, Moodie 3-32).

AT MELBOURNE: Retired West Indies pacer Courtney Walsh was wicketless as Boys' Town raced to 318, thanks to 116 from Alex Ranger and 89 from Omar A. Campbell. Nikita Miller and Ramon Hutchinson had two wicket each.

Meanwhile, rain prevented play in the two Middlesex Cup games. Matches scheduled were Clarendon vs St. Mary at Ebony Park and Manchester vs St. Ann at Manchester High.
