ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC:
OFF-SPINNING allrounder Gareth Breese snared a 10-wicket match haul for tournament leaders Jamaica in a huge nine-wicket win over West Indies 'B' late on the third day of their 2002 Busta Cup fifth-round match at the Botanical Gardens yesterday.
Breese, Man-of-the-match for the third week in a row, captured five wickets in each innings, and in spite of a dazzling and magnificent unbeaten hundred from West Indies B captain Roland Holder, the Jamaicans cruised to their fourth consecutive win with a day to spare.
West Indies B were bowled out for 179 in the morning session, and following on, posted 321 all out behind Holder's 112 not out, but the Jamaicans set 39 to win sped to victory at 39 for one off 5.5 overs.
West Indies B, facing their fourth consecutive defeat, surrendered their first innings quickly in the morning, adding just 31 runs to their overnight score of 148 for seven, as Breese grasped all three wickets
The in-form Breese, Man-of-the-match in recent wins over Barbados and the Leeward Islands, first had Camilus Alexander caught by Leon Garrick without scoring at 165 for eight, and then held a return catch to dislodge Ryan Nurse (9), before getting last-man Chaka Hodge.
Hodge hit two fours and a six in scoring 20.
Breese, with five for 73 off 26.2 overs, and left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham, five for 51 off 19 overs, shared the wickets for the reigning Busta International Shield champions.
Jamaica, whose huge first innings score 462 for seven declared was built around centuries by Garrick (138) and captain Robert Samuels (106 not out), enforced the follow-on and secured one West Indies 'B' wicket in the remaining hour and 15 minutes before lunch.
The attacking Krishna Arjune banged three sixes and three fours in scoring 38, but he was caught by Wavell Hinds at square leg 10 minutes before lunch, taken with the score of 64 for one.
Jamaica, pressing for their second three-day win this season, made serious inroads in the regional Development team's batting after the break, grabbing four wickets three to Breese and one to pacer Darren Powell.
Breese, a former West Indies youth captain, bowled Patrick Browne (7) at 74 for two, and Shane Jeffers missed an extravagant drive against him and was stumped by Hibbert for 44.
Jeffers struck three fours and two sixes before he departed at 99 for three, after which Powell sent back Kenroy Martin (26) caught at slip by Samuels, and on the stroke of tea Satish Naidoo was caught at mid-wicket by Jermaine Lawson of Breese for six.
Breese removed Antonio Mayers (30) soon after the break and part-time off-spinner Chris Gayle had Hodge (12) caught behind, ending a 61-run seventh-wicket stand with Holder.
Camilus Alexander was undone by a faster ball from Cunningham and was caught at slip by Samuels for 10 but Holder was on fire, exciting the crowd with shots to all parts of the ground.
Breese, after being struck for six by Nurse to the mid-wicket boundary gained almost immediate revenge when the West Indies youth player was caught on that boundary by Jermaine Lawson for nine.
In the meantime, Holder, who had moved to 96 with a six off Cunningham over long-off, attained his 17th first-class century in the following over.
The Trinidad-born Barbadian cut Breese through the off side for four to bring up his hundred, and immediately celebrated next ball with a six over long-off.
Holder's 100 came up in 108 minutes with 12 fours and six sixes off only 94 balls.
Last man Anderson Sealy entertained with three boundaries, but he departed for 16 caught behind off Powell, ending a 35-run partnership with Holder.
Breese ended with five for 121, Powell two for 40, and Cunningham two for 82.
Jamaica lost Wavell Hinds (9) caught by Sealy at mid-on off Nurse at 27 for one, but Garrick (26) and Breese (1) completed the job and continued the Jamaicans unbridled run towards the championship title.
