Cops rescue fishermen from gunmen

TWO FISHERMEN from Portland Cottage in Clarendon were rescued yesterday morning by the police after they were abducted from their home and taken to Kingston by four gunmen.

The Constant Spring police have since seized two vehicles that were driven by the gunmen. A burgundy F-150 pick up van and a green Toyota Corolla motor car were handed over to the narcotics police who are now involved in the investigation.

The fishermen were reportedly accused of stealing a speed boat belonging to the gunmen.

Further allegations are that the fishermen were surprised yesterday morning by the gunmen who forced them into the vehicles and took them to Kingston.

On their arrival, heading towards the Duhaney Park area, a police patrol made an observation that one of the car doors was half open. The patrol proceeded to trail the vehicles to a point where the driver of the Corolla and the F-150 van stopped and began conversing.

While they were talking, one of the fishermen managed to escape from the car but was chased by the men, guns in hand.

The patrol immediately called for reinforcements. The fisherman eluded the gunmen who returned to their vehicles and drove away. During a search of the area, the vehicles were seen at a premises in Red Hills, St. Andrew, near Mayfair.

It is alleged that while the police were entering the premises, the gunmen escaped by jumping over fences at the rear of the yard. During a quick search of the residence the other fisherman was found.

Up to press time last night, the two fishermen were being questioned by the Narcotics Police. The Clarendon police are also probing the circumstances under which the men were abducted.
