THE BRITISH High Commission yesterday dismissed reports of the likely imposition of visa requirement for Jamaicans as pure speculation.
Second secretary at the Commission, Gavin Tench said yesterday in a telephone interview that the Commission was aware of speculations in both local and foreign press of the expected visa but as far as he knew there were no such plans.
"The British High Commission is not aware of any decision having been taken to institute a visa regime but we are aware of media speculations," said Secretary Tench. He noted however that entry clearance procedures into the United Kingdom and the need for visitors entering the United Kingdom are constantly kept under review by ministers.
In a earlier report out of London last week, Minister of National Security Peter Phillips was quoted as saying, "the issue of a visa is real, having spoken to immigration officials here (London)."
Minister Phillips was addressing residents of the Jamaican community at the British High Commission in London. The Minister who said he had consulted with representatives of the Home Office in London which deals with immigration matters was however unable to say when this visa system would become a reality.
