Beef for School Feeding Programme

JAMAICA AGRICULTURAL Society (JAS) president Bobby Pottinger is proposing that beef be used in the School Feeding Programme as a means of revitalising the local cattle industry.

"We are going to approach the Ministry of Education (Youth and Culture) to see if instead of Nutri-bun we have (beef) patties and beef soup on the menu in the school system," he said this week at the Montpelier Agricultural Show

Mr. Pottinger also suggested that stray cattle be slaughtered and the meat sold to institutions. The JAS, he said, would be seeking to establish properties across the island to take stray animals off the streets. Encouraging Jamaicans to eat more beef, Mr. Pottinger said everything that went into its production was locally grown and none of the feared diseases that affected cattle were present in Jamaica.
