THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE TIME is long overdue for the United Nations organisation to be proactive in the peace process in Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The boundaries established at the creation of the Israeli State must be observed.
The Palestinians must have the right to sovereignty like all other people of the world including the Israelis. The right of one to be a sovereign state must in no way be inimical to the rights of the other to also exist as a sovereign state.
The ironic thing about this Israeli-Palestinian situation is that 34 years ago, the Israelis purported to be establishing their guaranteed security, violated the internationally established boundaries.
Today, although their military superiority is unquestioned and although they have shown very little restraint in the use of their power, they are less secure than at any other time since their inception in 1948. The 'hawks' have been running things for a long time and there has been much spilling of blood. The last Israeli dove's tenure was brought to a premature end by an Israeli assassin's bullet.
There is a lesson to be learnt in the current situation, where the 'hawk' of all 'hawks' is presiding but insecurity is at a new high; so too is killings on both sides. Maybe it is time to try something different by giving the 'doves' a chance.
The sentiment of our own Peter Tosh is worthy of note.
When he linked peace to justice, he was fundamentally correct. There can be no peace where there is no justice.
