Principal suggests metal detectors

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

Bryan

FOLLOWING A spate of violent incidents in schools across the island, Lloyd Bryan, principal of Calabar High, has suggested metal detectors being installed in schools.

According to Mr. Bryan, he made the suggestion at a recent meeting of principals.

Asked whether his school would install any such a device soon, Mr. Bryan said at this stage it was only a suggestion.

"I would have to look at the legality and the cost," he said.

But while he is looking in that direction, detectives probing an attack by students from that school on a security guard last week said they have not yet received any specific information to identify the schoolboys who stabbed the guard 13 times.

The guard, Damion Redley, who is still in hospital, was accused by the students of being an informer. This was after police searched and found an imitation handgun in the possession of a group of students.

According to a senior detective at the Constant Spring CIB, the investigative process to identify the student(s) who were involved in the incident has been challenging, but they were still pursuing with the matter.

Police personnel from the Constant Spring Police Community Relations Department, have been asked to assist in locating the students whose names were submitted to the police.

Mr. Bryan said two more students were taken to the Constant Spring Police Station yesterday by vice-principal Hugh Douse to give statements.

On Monday, the parents of two boys took them to the police for questioning. They were interrogated and later released.
