Schools and violence

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHATEVER OUR minds can perceive, can be achieved. Here in Jamaica we need to ask ourselves, are we ignoring the obvious signs of a catastrophe about to take place in our schools? Countries like the United States and Germany are far more disciplined societies, yet they have had unprecedented shooting carnages in their schools. Why is it unthinkable here?

Our schools are not isolated puritanical institutions, our children are exposed to the same levels of violence, injustice, indiscipline and criminality as the rest of us and are probably less equipped to deal with it.

The late Peter Tosh once sang, "you can't blame the youth of today, you can't blame the youth. You teach the youth about Marco Polo, and you said he was a very great man. You teach the youth about Henry Morgan and you said he was a very great man. All these great men were doing was robbing, raping and killing."

I am, etc.,
