Grace sets up scholarship to honour Bruce Rickards

Rickards

AN ANNUAL scholarship in honour of Bruce Rickards, retired director of Grace, Kennedy & Company who died in February, this year, is to be established by the Grace, Kennedy Foundation.

The scholarship, which will start in September, this year, will be made to a graduate of Mr. Rickards' high school alma mater Kingston College and will be tenable at a Jamaican-based university.

Douglas Orane, chief executive officer of Grace, Kennedy made the revelation in his report to shareholders for the financial year ended December 2001, which has been released ahead of the company's annual general meeting on June 25.

He said that Mr. Rickards, who died on February 23, this year at the age of 71, gave unstinting service to Grace, Kennedy for 42 years before he retired in 1993.

"Bruce will be remembered for his impeccable integrity and fairness to all those with whom he interacted," Mr. Orane said. "In his honour, the Grace, Kennedy Foundation will be awarding an annual scholarship, commencing in September of this year, to a graduate of his high school alma mater, Kingston College, for which he had a lifelong fondness."

Mr. Rickards is a former chairman of Grace, Kennedy's Harbour Cold Stores and a director of Medi-Grace, who rose to the rank of deputy managing director in the parent company during his career. He also served on the board of Grace, Kennedy Foundation.

He was chairman of the Kingston College Development Trust Fund, and a member of the management committee of the Kingston College Old Boys Association.
