LAND OWNERS dissatisfied with the new tax assessments on their properties may apply for a tax break if they believe the liabilities will pose a burden, but any change will be subject to approval by the Minister of Finance and Planning.
According to information supplied by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, those who disagree with the new value assigned to their lands may also object by serving a notice on the Commissioner of Land Valuation in Kingston within 60 days after receiving the valuation notice.
Property owners may apply for de-rating of agricultural lands in order to reduce their property tax liability by up to 50 per cent, the Ministry said. Such applications should be made to the Land Taxation Relief Board, a division of the National Land Agency. However, the owners must show that the land is being used solely for agricultural purposes.
