Jamaica and Cuba deepen co-operation

MINISTER OF State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Benjamin Clare, has welcomed broad areas of agreement reached between Jamaica and Cuba during the Third Meeting last month of the Bi-National Commission held in Havana.

Jamaica and Cuba agreed to deepen cooperation efforts in a number of areas including Agriculture, Education, Science and Technology, Culture, Tourism, Health and Security.

Referring to what he described as very "important agreements," Minister Clare who led Jamaica's delegation at the meeting, promised that it was Jamaica's intention to fully implement the agreements before the Bi-National Commission's next meeting in Kingston, Jamaica in 2004.

"We anticipate that when we next meet, we will be able to enter a new phase of cooperation and continue the important work carried out by this joint commission," Minister Clare told the closing session of the meeting on Wednesday.

Minister Clare noted that during his visit, he had a most "productive and informative exchange of views" with his counterpart Vice Minister Pedro Nunez Mosquera, on a range of regional and international issues of importance to Jamaica and Cuba.

Minister Clare reported that there was a good exchange of ideas on ways to promote trade between Jamaica and Cuba.
