Lue-yen clinches title

JAMAICA'S MELISSA Lue-yen struck gold on Tuesday night when she defeated defending Under-19 champion Tiffany Solomon of Guyana in five tough sets at the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association tournament at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston.

Lue-yen clinched the senior title 3-2 (9/3, 6/9, 5/9, 9/1, 9/3) in a keenly-fought final.

The final day of the individual tournament went mostly according to form with the exception of the girls Under-17 final where Andrea King from Guyana was an odds-on favourite against Chantal Day of Cayman but fell 3-0 (9/5, 9/6, 9/6).

In the boys Under-15s, Bryant Cumberbatch of Barbados beat Stanley Marcus of Guyana 3-1 (8/10, 9/2, 9/1, 9/3). The boys Under-17 final also provided a five-set climax with Guyana's Damien DaSilva finally getting by compatriot Ryan Farnum (8/9, 9/1, 9/6, 5/9, 9/7).

The boys Under-19 showdown was an all-Barbados affair with Gavin Cumber-batch sweeping Fabian Goodridge 3-0 (9/1,9/3,9/6).

Team play started yesterday with the local players hoping the home-court advantage will kick in against strong Guyanese and Barbadian teams.
