THEN & NOW: Junior 'One Blood' Reid

Left to right: Junior Reid now and then

HE WAS christened Delroy Reid Jr., but is better known as Junior Reid. He is a devout Rastafarian who grew up in the volatile inner-city community of Waterhouse.

He recorded his first single, Know Myself, at 14 years old, for the late Hugh Mundell, which was released in the United Kingdom by Greensleeves.

Junior then went on to form his own band, The Voices of Progress, and after a local hit with Minibus Drive, he went on to record an album of the same name.

On the demise of the band he went on to record a number of songs for Sugar Minott's Youth promotion and J.R. Productions, which included; Human Nature,

A1 Lover and Foreign Mind.

At age 18, Junior was asked to join legendary reggae group Black Uhuru as the lead singer. After that stint he went solo again and started his own production company, J.R. Productions.

The summer of '98 saw the release of Junior's solo album, One Blood. He won awards for 'Best Album', 'Best Single', 'Best Song' and 'Most Conscious Lyrics' at the Jamaican Music Industry Awards. Junior also received The Rockers Award that same year.

His follow-up album was Visa which was distributed through J.R. Productions, Greensleeves and Ras Records. In 1997 Junior Reid produced the album True World Order for J.R. Productions. During the course of his career, he has toured various places such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. In the same 1997, he teamed up with Bounty Killer and rap sensation Busta Rhymes for Change Just Like The Weather, who is just one of the many overseas acts Junior has collaborated with.

He also teamed up with rapper Canibus on the track Frounsi Sound Bwoy for Universal Records. He was also featured on rap group Wu-Tang Clan's album called The W. The year 2000 saw the release of another album, Emmanuel Calling. His most recent effort is Rasta Government, which is also produced by J.R. Productions, and released in March of this year.

Junior has also produced artistes such as the late Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs, The Mighty Diamonds and others.
