One dead in boat shooting, another missing in harbour

WESTERN BUREAU:

ONE MAN was shot and killed, two others injured and a fourth is now missing and presumed dead, following a shooting on board a pleasure boat in Montego Bay, St. James, early yesterday morning.

The dead man has been identified as Paul 'Woodyman' Haynes, a 36-year-old labourer of 23 Creek Street in Montego Bay. The identities of the two injured persons, a man, who is now a patient in the Cornwall Regional Hospital, and a woman, who was treated and released, have not been disclosed by the police. The missing man, who it is believed suffered a gunshot wound and fell in the sea, has been identified as David Ellis, the coach of the Montego Bay Boys Club football team. In the early 1990s, he represented Seba United in Craven 'A' NPL Football.

Up to press time yesterday, the Marine Police, who were combing the Montego Bay Harbour since early morning in search of Ellis' body, were unsuccessful in their effort to find him. The police report that the party boat in question Sharky's, with about 75 persons on board - was being used on one of its regular Sunday night cruise at about 1:30 a.m. when two men had a dispute. It is alleged that one of the men used a bottle to hit the other in his face, causing a wound.

The injured man reportedly pulled his licensed firearm and fired several shots hitting the four. Haynes was killed on the spot while the other two persons sustained gunshot wounds. The female was hit in her right leg while the man was shot in his left leg.

When the boat docked at the Pier One Entertainment Complex following the incident, the three injured persons were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital. The woman was treated and released while the man was admitted under observation.

The firearm holder, whose name is being withheld pending the investigations, has been admitted to hospital under police guard. His gun has not been recovered.
