Bodies found in Vineyard Town pit

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THREE BODIES, including that of an ex-wife of a People's National Party (PNP) executive, were found in a 30-foot deep pit in an abandoned housing scheme on Fourth Avenue, Vineyard Town, Kingston 3, yesterday.

The woman, Yvonne Beaumont-Walters, was formerly married to the PNP's Deputy General Secretary, attorney-at-law Linton Walters.

Mr. Walters, who went to the scene yesterday, was overcome with emotion and had to be taken away by a friend.

The body of Mrs. Walters, who was a lecturer at the Shortwood Teachers' College, was identified by PNP general secretary, Maxine Henry-Wilson, who wept after looking at the partially decomposed body.

"I don't know how he (Mr. Linton) is going to break the news to his children, knowing they were the ones who called on Saturday to say that their mother had not come home," Mrs Henry-Wilson said.

The Rev. Al Miller identified another of the bodies as Jeffery Beaumont, a nephew of Mrs. Walters, who accompanied her out last Friday, when both went missing.

The third body cannot be immediately identified because only skeletal remains were seen. But up to late yesterday, the police, equipped with heavy-duty vehicles and assisted by workmen from the National Water Commission (NWC), were trying to retrieve what appears to be human skulls found in another pit, in the Jacques Road community, off Mountain View Avenue.

Reports are that Mrs. Walters and her nephew left their St. Andrew home to pick up a third person. They were scheduled to attend a social function. Allegations are that they were intercepted and abducted in the vicinity of Washington Drive, near Peppers Nightclub.

Bloodstains found in a gully, which borders the abandoned housing scheme in Fourth Avenue and the Jacques Road community, suggested that they were executed and taken to the pit where they were dumped.

Forensic pathologist, Dr. Ere Seshaiah, conducted a post-mortem examination on the scene and concluded that Mrs. Walters and Mr. Beaumont died from multiple gunshot wounds. Both were shot in the back of the head and elsewhere on their body.

Mrs. Walters was clad in a pair of black fitted jeans and black blouse. Her underwear and brassiere were found in her pants pocket.

The pits with the bodies were found during a joint search by members of the Special Anti-Crime Task Force (SACTF) and the Crime Management Unit (CMU), led by Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams.

"We have been on the trail since they went missing. Today (yesterday) we got intelligence which led us to this abandoned scheme where two pits were searched," Mr. Adams told The Gleaner.

Senior Superintendent Tony Hewitt said that Mrs. Walters' car was found along Thorborne Avenue on Saturday. "The car is now at the Elletson Road police station," said Mr. Hewitt.

He added that a part of the vehicle was also found in the Jacques Road area. Further investigations on Sunday led them to the bloodstains in the gully. Several stones with bloodstains were also found nearby. The police said bloodstains were seen at the mouth of a pit. A hand bag was found in the vicinity.

The discovery of the bodies drew a large crowd, which included several senior members of the governing PNP.
