Tough day for Pools players

By ORVILLE CLARKE, Freelance Writer

The horses leave the gates for last Saturday's 10th race over 1820 metres. The event for 3-y-o's and upwards was won by 7/2 shot, seven-year-old NEFTENGA, in 1:55.4. Robert Reid was the winning rider. - Michael Sloley /Freelance Photographer

LAST WEEK'S Racing Pools game proved a nightmare for players, as only one punter with 28 points was good enough to take home the category two first prize of $46,711.40.

The carryover which stands at $67,000 should ensure a first prize of over $250,000 this weekend.

On a day when SIXSIXTHIRTYSIX (8-1), AUGUS MAWNIN (15-1), DOCTOR ON CALL (6-1) and VISCOSITY (11-1) provided the upsets, it was not surprising that the winning level was so low.

Indeed, most players were hijacked from the very first race when the howling 1-2 favourite MISS HIMO finished a floundering last in a race she was widely used as a banker.

Victory went to 5-1 chance TANGO DANCER who was disqualified following a Stewards' Inquiry and the race awarded to SIXSIXTHIRTYSIX with whom he had interfered in the latter stages.

Only one favourite obliged and he did not arrive until the very last race in the form of 5-2 chance BELLY DANCER, win number 50 for in-form Trinidadian Brian Harding on the card.

After disappointing her many backers as a 3-5 favourite the previous week, BELLY DANCER outstayed rivals to win quite comfortably with Harding replacing Neville "Briggy" Stephenson.

Perhaps the most fascinating winner of the day was SHAHID who came from last to first to win the sixth race for the Knutsford Park Cup at odds of 9-2.

Trained by Richard Donaldson, the 3-y-o bay colt by Star Attitude out of Sakena is a much better horse that we are led to believe and don't be surprised if by mid-October he is a contender for the rich and prestigious WITRA Classic over 2000 metres.
