Ja Grande, Couples hunt spot in final

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

David Bernard Jr.

JAMAICA GRANDE and Couples Ocho Rios will clash in the first semi-final of the 2002 John Issa/SuperClubs, Super-Inclusive Resorts sponsored St. Ann/St. Mary Hotels cricket competition at Content Gardens Sports Oval today, starting at 10:30 a.m.

As usual, fans at the Content Gardens should be in for an exciting day of cricket when two of the top hotels clash with national players on show for both teams in the 50-over-a-side game.

The second semi-final between defending champions Royal Decameron, formerly Club Caribbean, and many-time champions Shaw Park, will follow on Thursday at the same venue, with both winners meeting in the Best-of-Three final next Tuesday and Thursday, and the following Tuesday is necessary.

Barrington Christie, who scored a swashbuckling undefeated 143 against Dunn's River and the Jamaica Defence Force's Warren Medwynter, the man who scored the first century in this year's championship, will lead the Couples Ocho Rios batting charge.

They should get valuable support from Oniel Weir and Jason Goldson who have played a good supporting role all season.

Their bowling attack will be spearheaded by St. Catherine's Senior Cup player, Peter Pottinger, fast bolwer Medwynter, Jason Goldson along with others.

However, the mighty Jamaica Grande possess the services of Jamaica players David Bernard Jr. and Laurie Williams, along with former national representative and hard-hitting batsman Howard Harris, former national youth player Danza Hyatt, Renford Pinnock Jr., Damion Wilmot, Dean Richards and Richard Hoillette providing a big boost to their batting line-up.

Medium pacers Williams, Hyatt and Bernard, along with spinners Hoillette and Richards, should do the bulk of the bowling for Jamaica Grande, who stand a very good chance of advancing to next Tuesday's final.
