No one remembers Marcus Garvey

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AUGUST 17, 2002 was the 115th anniversary of the birth date of his Excellency Honourable Marcus Garvey. But it was allowed to go by with little or no fanfare, all because the people of today's Jamaica don't know how to appreciate a legend. For they lack knowledge, which is light, so when there is no light in the brain, the brain can only project or conceive evil thoughts.

Now there is a saying which goes: "while some people are fondly remembered for their deeds or kindness, others are recalled with contempt for their dastardly behaviour. Of wondrous deeds are heroes made honoured and revered."

So it doesn't matter how they suppress Garvey's works, he will continue to live in the minds of many for the part he played in the renaissance of the Negro race, both at home and in the diaspora.

I am, etc.,

ALLAN MARTIN
