THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS in very poor taste that the Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. P.J. Patterson has sought to include the pregnancy of the wife of the Opposition Leader, Mrs. Carla Seaga, in the political campaign. As men, we need to be more respectful and sensitive of women, and be careful of how we make reference to them.
Many, if not most of us are not in agreement with the contempt often meted out to our women folk. We consider them not only bearers of our children but they continue to make a significant contribution as they give support to their male counterparts. It is ironic that our women are expected to possess feminine values yet are judged by male values.
The Jamaican electorate is more sophisticated and will seek to vote on issues. Let us endeavour to lift the level of the campaign in this regard. We suggest that those who aspire for political office give us the electorate enough reasons for electing them. The ability to launch personal attacks should not be one of them.
I am, etc.,
