BLACK RIVER:
A CONTRACT, valued at $12 million, was signed between the Jamaica Library Service and Maxwell Construction Company of Santa Cruz to expand the St. Elizabeth Parish Library, at the agency's regional office in Black River, St. Elizabeth on Tuesday.
Speaking at the signing, Director General of the Jamaica Library Service, Pat Roberts, said the contract period will be 7 months and the work was scheduled to start on day two after the contract had been signed.
"It's a part of the constant improvement of the library service and its physical facilities islandwide. The aim is to improve the learning environment at the library," she added.
She said that the expansion project will be funded by the government of Jamaica and the Library Service. She added that the government's contribution to the project was $5 million and that her agency will be staging several fund-raising events to come up with their portion of the funds.
Upon completion, the expansion will add more space to the study area and junior library, a rest room, an accounts department and a general reception area. Managing director of Maxwell Construction, Eric Maxwell, said everything will be done to ensure that the work is completed within the allotted timeframe and stays within budget.
The St. Elizabeth Parish Library was established in the 1930s and is one of the eleven branch libraries in the parish.
