THE EDITOR, Sir:
MY FATHER died nearly thirty years ago, but even then there was a healthy cynicism regarding the rush of activity and promises prior to elections. His comparison was with the following:
The first Earthling had just landed on Mars after a space flight of many months. He was astounded to observe that the Martians in every respect looked just like Earthlings. He saw a most beautiful young lady with a mixing bowl and a large wooden spoon, seemingly 'rubbing up' a cake. He asked 'What are you making?' to which she replied, 'Making a baby.' Imagine his surprise.
In the event after a long time of mixing, lo and behold a baby emerged. He, being greatly attracted and after so long a flight, told her that babies were otherwise made on Earth and she agreed that she would like to see how they were made. And so he showed her.
Afterwards, she asked 'Where's the baby?' and he replied 'Oh, you have to wait nine months for that.' To which she responded, 'So what was the big rush for at the end?'
There will be a big rush followed by inactivity.
