Parties should address the crime issue

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE ARE on the eve of an election and the main debate I have heard so far from the politicians is about free education. This is a very emotive topic and it draws everyone into the debate. But it cannot work, for as Michael Manley found out in the 1970s, if the economy is not in good sustainable form then it is doomed. I would very much like to hear from the political directorate on this matter.

I think that all the political parties are missing a wonderful opportunity by not addressing the problem of crime and violence and how they are going to tackle it if they become the next government. The Jamaican electorate after 40 years of Independence have not demonstrated that they have the collective capacities to demand of these politicians better governance. Pork barrel politics is still the order of the day.

Wake-up Jamaica, we are being decimated by the scourge of crime and violence and with all the material things that you may acquire, if law and order is absent or severely compromised then you will not live long enough to enjoy them. We need to grow up quickly as our children depend on our positive actions today.

I am etc.,

MICHAEL JOHNSON
