Unhappy with music questions

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY ALLOW me to share a concern with fellow readers.

Last season as I watched Schools' Challenge Quiz on TVJ, I became rather uncomfortable with the questions given in each music section. Music questions dealt with the names of local singers mainly and the title of popular songs. In the other subject areas, the questions came from the curriculum. Why should music not be treated similarly?

What is taught in schools as music these days? Do schools still prepare students in music for the Associated Board Examina-tions? Do they still study the theory of music and the lives of great musicians?

The questions on musicians/singers and the names of songs, to my mind, should fall under general knowledge. Where are our music teachers? Help please!! Could someone please speak up on the subject "Music", in the Schools' Challenge Quiz?

I am, etc.,

LLOYD G. HINES

St. Catherine
