How useful are the polls?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MR. PATTERSON has accused Mr. Seaga of disrespecting the Jamaican public when he attributed the increased PNP ratings in a recently disclosed poll taken shortly after the Emancipation, Independence celebrations and Junior World Games, to rum and other "feel good" responses to this massive, costly PR Party paid for by taxpayers.

Hey, Mr. Patterson, since when is rum-drinking and other "feel good" lifting of spirits considered disrespectful to or by Jamaicans?

On the other hand, let's consider the effects of drinking milk instead of milking cows advocated by a high-profile ex-Minister of your Government on the psyche and productivity of Jamaicans? The more important question that should be asked is how useful are stale-dated polls results (sometimes as late as three plus weeks) in assessing the true Party standings at any given time. They can, however, be effectively used to demoralise and influence future political party standings in the next polls in psychological mind games played by pollsters.

I am, etc.,

JEAN B. ANDERSON
