Wolmer's swamp Greater Portmore 8-0

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

DOUBLE STRIKES from Howard Wong and Maurice Jackson led Wolmer's to a crushing 8-0 win over a young and inexperienced Greater Portmore team in their Pepsi/Sports Plus Group A Manning Cup football competition at Heroes Circle yesterday.

Howard scored in the sixth and 35th minutes, while Jackson was on target in the 10th and 91st. Colin Jackson (39th), Andre McKenzie (41st), Shomari Glanville (80th) and second-half substitute Jermaine Gardener (84th) were the other scorers for the home team.

With the win, Wolmer's moved to six points and joint second place with Ascot, however, the latter have played a game more (three). They are one point behind leaders Calabar, who have seven from four game, Holy Trinity, Excelsior and Ardenne follow that trio of sides with three points each.

Meanwhile, over in Group B, newcomers Innswood continued their impressive run with a 2-0 victory over Donald Quarrie at Chedwin Park. Innswood now have the maximum 12 points from four game, three ahead of Jamaica College (three games), Donald Quarrie and Spanish Town (three each).

Wolmer's coach Michael Francis believes the opposition was a little weak and that contributed to his team's big victory.

"However, I am a bit concerned with how the upcoming games are scheduled, we are going to play about three games in seven days. However, barring injury, I think we can get into the second round pretty comfortably from this group and take it from there," Francis said.

"Goalscoring, coming into this game, was my main concern but getting eight goals here today is a very good," he said.

Shawn Cunningham, Greater Portmore's coach, said despite having a young and inexperienced team they were outplayed by the home team.

"All our players are coming from last year's Colts Under-16 competition, we didn't retain any of our players," Cunningham said.

"We were outplayed in today's but we showed in patches that we have the ability to compete at this level," he said.

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

Wolmer's 8 Greater Portmore 0, Ascot 3 Ardenne 2, Innswood 2 Donald Quarrie 0, Calabar 2 Holy Trinity 1, Spanish Town 1 Haile Selassie 0.
