Past and present parliamentarians receive honours

Several current and former members of the Jamaican Parlia-ment were honoured yesterday at the National Honours and Awards presentations. Some were recognised for their services as parliamentarians while others were honoured for their contributions in their professional fields.

Those honoured were:

Former People's National Party Cabinet Minister, Horace Clarke, who received the highest honour that of Order of Jamaica (O.J.), for outstanding service in Government. Mr. Clarke served several PNP administrations as Minister of Public Utilities and Transport, Mining and Energy, Water and Transport and Agriculture.

Eric Anthony Abrahams, currently host of the morning talk show, 'The Breakfast Club', but also a former Minister of Tourism and Jamaica Labour Party Member of Parliament for East Portland and East Kingston and Port Royal between 1980 and 1989. He was honoured with the Order of Distinction (Commander class) for services to tourism and broadcast journalism.

Douglas Orane, chief executive officer for Grace, Kennedy and Company Ltd. and up to recently an independent member of the Senate, was honoured for his contribution to commerce and the private sector.

Karl Samuda, the only current parliamentarian who has represented both the JLP and the PNP in the House of Representatives and in the same constituency, North Central St. Andrew. Mr. Samuda was honoured with the Order of Distinction (Commander class) for over 20 years' service to Parliament.

Euphemia Advira Williams, who defeated Prime Minister P.J. Patterson in Eastern Westmoreland in the 1980 General Election representing the JLP, was honoured with the Order of Distinction (Officer class) for services to politics and the community.

Terrence Gillette, Minister of State in the previous PNP administration and former MP for Western St. Mary, who retired just prior to the recent general election, was honoured with the Order of Distinction (Officer class) for services to Parliament.

Lester Michael 'Mike' Henry, book publisher and JLP MP for Central Clarendon, was honoured for over 20 years of service to Parliament.

Douglas Manley, son of National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Norman Manley and brother of former Prime Minister, the late Michael Manley, who is a former MP for South Manchester and Minister of Health in the 1970s PNP administration, was honoured for his contribution to education and community development.

Noel Monteith, principal of G.C. Foster College, former Jamaica Teachers' Association president and PNP Senator up to last session, was honoured for his contribution to education and sports.
