Some great Jamaican men

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS MEDIUM is used to express profound gratitude to some great Jamaican men who have come forward, stood up as men among men, and made a difference at a time when it mattered most. These Jamaican men have demonstrated to the nation and the world that they are indeed men of integrity who put the nation's interest above their personal concerns. They stand out as beacons amidst darkness and dared to set the pace; and, indeed, I am proud to have been identified with them as a volunteer election worker.

I speak of the chairman of the Electoral Advisory Committee, Professor Errol Miller, and the Director of Elections, Mr. Danville Walker, who have - along with their team - done a splendid job in ensuring that the democratic process was served in the recent general election.

Having served as supervisor (first-time worker) in the St. Catherine Southern constituency, I commend the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EoJ) not only for its determination but also for planning and organising strategically to achieve its goal of a free and fair election. The training of its volunteer workers, dissemination of information through the manuals, dedication of EoJ staff, the unity of spirit of so many Jamaicans to make the system work made me feel proud to have been a volunteer.

People want a better Jamaica and Jamaica is today proud of those who have made possible the level of professionalism with which the recent elections were held. There was significant improvement and the desire should be to get better and better. Maybe in the future, efforts can be made to obtain premises which facilitate crowd control to make the task easier for everyone, including the security personnel.

Hats off also to Sgt. Brian Stewart and Woman Constable Raphael of the Greater Portmore police station, who worked at the Greater Portmore Basic School. They worked with dignity and professionalism and I am proud of them. They represented the police force well and I say congratulations to the police on a job well done.

Congratulations Prof. Miller. Congratulations Mr. Walker. Congratulations Jamaica. To God be the glory for the things He has done.

I am, etc.,

MARCIA BLAKE
