Woman kidnapped, ransom sought

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

A 35-YEAR-OLD woman who dropped off her son early yesterday morning at Meadowbrook High School, Meadowbrook, St. Andrew, was reportedly kidnapped, with a $100,000 ransom being sought from her family.

Detectives close to the investigation said the woman who lives in Portmore, St. Catherine, dropped off her son about 6:30. Two hours later she called her boss.

"She was crying, while telling her boss that she had been kidnapped and that her captors were demanding $100,000," a senior detective told The Gleaner.

According to the police it was unclear exactly where she was kidnapped. Her son's school is on Meadowbrook Avenue, which is off Red Hills Road, St. Andrew.

Up to late yesterday evening the police said nobody had heard anything further from the woman since she called her boss at 8.30 a.m. Her 1989 white Nissan Toyota car registered 0476 BC was still missing.

Det. Supt. Calvin Benjamin, head of Police Area 5 CIB, said he was appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the kidnapping or who may have seen the car, to call Crime Stop, the Constant Spring CIB or the nearest police station.

The police say that more than 10 persons have been kidnapped since the start of the year, some have turned up dead, while ransoms have been paid for the release of others.

Among persons abducted since March this year were Yvonne Beaumont-Walters and her relative, Jeffery Beaumont. Their bodies were found in a pit in Vineyard Town, Kingston, last month.

In August, two women were abducted from a car park in Half-Way Tree. One was later dumped from the vehicle alive in Stony Hill, St. Andrew. It is still not known what happened to the other woman.
