Walker Cup kicks off

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

FOUR OF this year's top Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup teams will be in action at Ferdie Neita Sports Complex today when the quarter-final round of the Walker Cup Knockout competition gets under way at 1:00 p.m.

Today's games will see Dunoon up against Wolmer's at 1:00 while Excelsior take on Kingston College at 3:00.

In the feature match, Kingston College, entering the game as one of three unbeaten teams this season, should start slim favourites against Excelsior, who lost two games on their way to the second round.

Kingston College possess a record of seven wins, three draws, 23 goals for and four against, while their opponents secured 10 wins and two losses from 12 games with 30 goals for and eight against.

The semi-final line-up will be completed tomorrow when Jamaica College face Spanish Town at 1:00 p.m followed by the much-anticipated battle between Charlie Smith and defending champions Bridgeport at 3:00 at the same venue.

Bridgeport's coach, Anthony Patrick, believes tomorrow's game against Charlie Smith will be interesting and attacking.

"The team that converts more of its chances will come out on top. However, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't win," Patrick said.

"The boys are not playing up to standard, but despite that we are still getting five or six goals per match. Once we play to our full potential tomorrow there is nothing to stop us from coming away with a victory," said Patrick, who guided Bridgeport in his first season a senior coach to two titles last year.

The coach of Charlie Smith, Jerome Waite, says he anticipates a very interesting game between the two top teams in this year's competition.

"The game should be a nut cracker, but I still would give Bridgeport the edge because they are the defending champions and should be more experienced," Waite said.
