Now is not the time to hide

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM very surprised at the fact that the JTB has decided to withdraw its advertisements from the US networks. This, apparently, is based on the recent discovery that a young Jamaican was involved in the recent sniper attacks in the D.C. area.

One would have thought, however, that it would be wiser to even step up the ad campaign at this time. Good public relations is undoubtedly what is required in this situation in order to reduce whatever negative repercussions there may be.

The JTB must understand that we do not only need to counter the negative press but also reassure the American public at large and potential visitors to the island.

Now is not the time to hide. The board should now be taking strategic steps to protect our fragile tourism industry. The actions taken could very well prove to be a serious self-inflicted wound that will no doubt take a very long time to heal.

I am, etc.,
