Truck drivers should be more considerate

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TRUCKS ARE no doubt an essential part of the commercial life of this country. I also believe that the drivers of these trucks know this and so they are increasingly taking advantage, liberty even, of this dominant position that they hold on our roads.

How many motorists have come upon trucks that are driven as if they are Ferraris on a speedway? Or in the converse trucks that are driven in the middle of a narrow road holding all other motorists hostage for miles on end? Or trucks that are driven dangerously and intimidatingly close to your bumper? Or trucks that come to a halt in the roadway as the drivers converse with each other?

Or trucks that consistently seem to hold the road as every time an opportunity presents itself for you to overtake they drift into the right lane despite your pleas via your horn? Or trucks that break down around a corner but they don't have the necessary warning triangles or any flag men to warn unsuspecting motorists? Or trucks that claim to be parked but the enormous appetite of said truck consumes the entire left lane of the road?

Or trucks transporting human cargo and the body protruding law is ignored? Or trucks that change lanes without the requisite warning? Or trucks transporting things like marl and stones but said material is uncovered or poorly covered and so you have to weave and bob to avoid damage to your vehicle? Or trucks transporting sewage, garbage, or grease that leak onto the roadway causing a terrible nuisance. Or trucks that pass your home in the wee hours of the morning accompanied by loud sounds of the brakes and or horns?

Trucks! We can't live without them. It is the drivers that could be more considerate.

I am, etc.,
