Security guard killed

John Myers Jnr, Freelance Writer

CLARENDON
A SECURITY GUARD was shot and killed when bandits invaded the Cool Oasis Gas Station in Palmer's Cross, May Pen, making off with cash estimated at over $80,000 on Thursday.

The dead security guard has been identified as 36-year-old Melroy Meeks of a Sandy Bay address. He is said to be employed to Alpha Security Ltd.

Reports are that at about 6:15am, a white Toyota Carolla station waggon pulled up into the gas station with an undetermined number of men aboard. One of the men reportedly ordered gas and a bottle of engine oil.

The police say the security guard was shot, when one of the men went inside the gas station building to collect the engine oil. He pulled a firearm and fired several shots at the security guard, who was on duty, hitting him in the head and chest.

A filing cabinet containing between $80,000 and $100,000 was stolen by the gunmen, along with a Taurus revolver with six live rounds belonging to the security guard. The gunmen made their escape in the waiting station wagon.

Meeks was taken to the May Pen hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two pump attendants who were present at the time of the incident were reportedly gunbutted by the gunmen.

The May Pen Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is investigating.
