Illegal street vending a major problem

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

ILLEGAL STREET vending is still a major problem in Black River and Santa Cruz, in spite of efforts by the St. Elizabeth Parish Council to address it.

The Council has been trying over the last 10 months, to end illegal vending on Brigade Street and Market Street in Black River. In Santa Cruz, the problem is most prevalent on Main Street and Coke Drive.

According to Mayor of Black River, Daphne Holmes, while the Council was making some headway in addressing the problem in Santa Cruz, the situation in Black River got out of hand.

"The commercial services manager of the Council, Willard Thompson, issued removal notices to all the persons who have been vending illegally in the town of Black River. The vendors know themselves, and this will be enforced in a severe way," Mrs. Holmes said.

President of the Black River Citizens Association, JAG Myers, said the time had come for the Parish Council to find an alternative site to relocate the vendors before removing them off the streets. He said that the agency should use its discretion in dealing with the vendors.

Mr. Myers said that the Council should put the planned removal of vendors from the streets of Black River on hold, until a suitable, alternative vending area was identified for them.
