CLARENDON:
THREE WOMEN charged with conspiracy to defraud and public mischief were granted bail when they appeared in the May Pen Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The three were Phyllis Williams, 42-year-old contract vendor of Supreme Ventures Limited, Judith Phidd, 26-year-old and Icolette Johnson, 25-year-old. They are all from Corn Piece, Hayes, Clarendon.
They were slapped with the charges on November 5, after investigations by the police revealed that the $155,270 of sales from the SVL's drop pan game that they reported stolen was really a conspiracy among them to steal the money.
According to court report, Williams said she gave Phidd money which she had made from the day's sale on the day in question to lodge at the bank. Phidd claims that on the way to the bank, she was held up and robbed of the cash.
Phidd subsequently made a report to the May Pen police, at which time she took Johnson, claiming that she was a witness to the robbery. At the time they made the report, the police were led to believe that the two women did not know each other. However, following investigations into the matter by the police, it was discovered that Johnson, the alleged witness to the robbery, was the daughter of Williams.
As a result, the three women were brought in for questioning, at which time they changed their story and Williams, reportedly, told the police in a cautioned statement that she had borrowed the money.
When they appeared in court, they were granted bail. Johnson and Phidd in the sum of $70,000 and Williams in the sum of $100,000.
The three women are scheduled to reappear in court again on December 16.
