CABINET SECRETARY Dr. Carlton Davis and Patricia Ramsay of the University of Technology (UTech), have been appointed to the board which is being established under the Companies Act to administer the CHASE fund.
The fund is being established by law to administer taxes collected through the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission for the Ministry of Finance and dedicated to the development of Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Early Childhood Education (CHASE).
Burchell Whiteman, Minister of Information, told journalists on Monday that other persons would soon be named to the board. He was speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
"The board will ensure that projects and expenditures approved under the fund are consistent with the provisions of the law and the policies laid down by the Government," Mr. Whiteman said.
In July, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act, which allowed the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission to require the payment of a monetary contribution by lottery promoters to be allocated to sports, health, early childhood education and arts and culture.
The Bill, which was piloted by Dr. Omar Davies, Finance and Planning Minister, also sought to establish a fund (now known as CHASE) in which these monetary contributions would be deposited. It also empowered the Minister to waive, refund or remit any contributions made under the existing provisions.
