Spanish Town peace meeting postponed
published: Monday | November 18, 2002

A MEETING scheduled for last Wednesday between the Peace Management Initiative (PMI), Olivia "Babsy" Grange, the Member of Parliament for Central St. Catherine, and Sharon Hay Webster, her South Central St. Catherine counterpart, did not take place.

The meeting was postponed following concerns expressed by Miss Grange and her supporters about their safety, as well as the location of the meeting.

"I am willing to meet with Miss Webster and the groups, but it must be at a neutral location," said Miss Grange.

The meeting was scheduled to bring together the political representatives of Spanish Town and adjoining communities where there have been several violent killings since the October 16 general election. The parties were supposed to meet to work out a solution to the conflicts.

Speaking with The Gleaner on Thursday, Stephanie Webb, spokesperson for one of the groups that was suppose to met with the political representatives, said a meeting was held at the Spanish Town Parish Council.

According to Ms. Webb, only one set of representatives attended the meeting. She said a mass meeting is being scheduled for Tuesday.

Rev. Terrence Brown, a member of the Spanish Town Minister's Fraternal, told The Gleaner that "something went wrong" and only one group turned up for the meeting.
