Waters recede at New River
published: Thursday | November 21, 2002

By Michael McLean, Freelance Writer

CLAREMONT:

THE WATER at New River is receding and things are getting back to normal, said Mr. Kingsley Clarke, a resident of the community which has been under water since June.

Mr. Clarke told The Gleaner on Friday, that most of the residents who were forced to leave their homes, due to rising water caused by heavy rains, were now back at home.

"Our major problem right now is mosquitoes. There are a lot of mosquitoes affecting us, especially at nights," said Mr. Clarke.

The water started to go down over three weeks ago, after representatives from the National Underwater Resources Authority cut open a dike road for the water to run off. One resident said even if they don't get anymore rain for a long time, it could take several months before the area that the water covered is fully dried up.

New River was cut off from the rest of Santa Cruz first in June this year, when the island was pelted with heavy rains, flooding many homes, and it worsened when the rains came again in late September.
