Kgn attorney appointed Puisne Judge in Cayman

PRIYA LEVERS, the prominent Kingston attorney-at-law, has been appointed a Puisne Judge in the Cayman Islands effective April 1, 2003.

She is the first woman to get a permanent post on the Grand Court Bench in Cayman. In August this year, Mrs. Levers acted for a month as a Puisne Judge in Cayman.

Mrs. Levers read law in England and was called to Bar at the Inner Temple, London. She was also admitted to practise in Bermuda where she was its first woman Crown Counsel, holding that post from 1972 to 1977.

In 1977 Mrs. Levers married businessman Laker Levers and came to live in Jamaica. Mrs. Levers who is from Siri Lanka was admitted to practise in Jamaica in 1985.

"I am grateful for the experience and the manner in which Jamaica adopted me and the many friends I have made amongst my clients and my profession," she said yesterday when asked about her experience here.

"I have had many years of happiness here and carry with me some happy memories. On a personal level I have three Jamaican children and that will be my tie to Jamaica for life."

She said she was looking forward to the new challenge of her job in the Cayman Islands.
