Chuck mines gold at CAC

SWIMMER Angela Chuck is in top form in the pool, capturing Jamaica's two medals to date at the XIX Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador.

Angela, daughter of Member of Parliament Delroy Chuck, clocked 2:07.81 to take gold in the women's 200m freestyle last night. Atenas Itzel Lopez Dominguez of Mexico took the silver in 2:08.09. The bronze went to homegirl Golda Marcus Lee of El Salvador.

Chuck added to the 100m freestyle bronze she earned on Sunday. The 21-year-old athlete formerly of Immaculate and now a student of Brown University In Rhode Island, in her second CAC appearance, was third in the 100m freestyle in 59.91 seconds. The gold was won by Panama's Eileen Marie Caparropa (56.58) and silver went to Venezuela's Arlene Iradie Semeco Arismendi in second 57.87.

The medals put Jamaica in joint eighth place in the standing behind Venezuela who lead the standing with 43 medals, (22 gold, 17 silver and four bronze), ahead of Mexico on 36 (14 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze), Colombia 29 medals (8 gold, 21 silver and nine bronze). Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago are also in eighth place after picking up gold in the men's 50m breast-stroke .

Jamaica have so far participated in squash, table tennis and cycling.

In squash, Ronald Prescod advanced to the second round after a three set win over M. Caines of Bermuda. Steve Smith also had a three set victory over his El Salvador opponent to advance.

Jamaica's contingent has also won two of the three table tennis matches they have played. The team blanked St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0, lost to Venezuela 2-3, before beating Mexico 3-0.

The footballers will bow into action today. They are drawn in a very competitive Group 3 alongside Honduras and Mexico.

The Under-23s should have their first taste of action today at 6:00 p.m. local time, when they play Honduras. They will then play Mexico on Thursday in the last preliminary round game. The top two from each group will advance to the next round.

In football matches completed so far, Guatemala got the better of Colombia 1-0 in Group 1. Group 2 saw Venezuela and Costa Rica playing to a 1-1 draw. Mexico defeated Honduras 4-1 in Group 3, while El Salvador rolled over Nicaragua 4-0.
