GOVERNMENT SENATOR Noel Monteith, does not have the loudest voice in the Upper House. However, when he speaks, his words carry an authority that is indicative of his years of experience as a school master.
Mr. Monteith, 60, is principal of G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport. He is also a former principal of Cornwall College.
This son of Black River, St. Elizabeth, was educated at Kilmarnock Primary School, Mico Teachers College, Ottawa University (Canada) and Leeds University (England).
He has worked as a pre-trained teacher at Kilmarnock Primary School 1959-60; teacher at Grange Hill 1964-65; principal, Carmel All-Age 1965-69; lecturer, Mico Teachers College 1969-1972; and principal, Maud McLeod Secondary School 1976-1986.
Mr. Monteith is a former president of the Jamaica Teachers Association; former president of the Jamaica Amateur Volley Ball Association as well as a former president of the Sunset All Stars Volley Ball Club.
He made his direct entry into politics in 1993 as a Senator for the governing People's National Party. He also served as deputy president of the Senate during the last Parliament and has been acknowledged by his colleagues as having done a splendid job.
He was reappointed to the Senate after the October 16 general election but this time with a more direct involvement in Government. He was named by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson as one of two Ministers of State in the Ministry of Education a fitting culmination to a life dedicated to education.
