Security forces to stay Will remain in volatile communities while necessary
NATIONAL SECURITY Minister Dr. Peter Phillips says the security forces are prepared to stay in volatile communities for as long as it takes to break the back of criminal gangs and end the orgy of violence that has paralysed the country.

Gov't to set up Consultative Committee on Crime Plan
THE MINISTER of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, told the House yesterday that the government will be moving to implement some of the recommendations contained in the Report of the National Committee on Crime and Violence.


J'can dollar plunges
IT TOOK an average of $50.03 to buy US$1 in foreign exchange trading yesterday. This was the first time the Bank of Jamaica's (BoJ) weighted average exchange rate had breached the J$50 to US$1 barrier.

Cabinet approves draft to amend GCT Act
CABINET ON Monday approved drafting instructions to amend the General Consumption Tax (GCT) Act which would allow persons dissatisfied with a decision of the Commissioner of Taxpayer Audit and Assessment to appeal.


Scotland Yard team coming
AN ASSESSMENT team from Scotland Yard, the London Metropolitan Police, will visit the island next week ahead of the implementation of strategies aimed at smashing the gangs which are blamed for the country's spiralling crime wave.
