UP TO June this year, 322 persons had succumbed to the deadly HIV/AIDS. Over the same period, about 511 new cases of HIV were reported to the Ministry of Health, 40 of whom were children under 10 years old. An estimated 21,000 Jamaicans are living with the virus and don't know that they are. We can no longer deny it, HIV/AIDS is serious business.
We are in a state of emergency and the time to act is now.
At this time, many of us are more concerned about the Christmas party or the presents we have to buy. While we party, let us remember those in our midst for whom celebration means being alive for one more day. This is the reality of many persons living with HIV/AIDS.
With this in mind, The Gleaner's Editorial Department has decided to spread some of its Christmas cheer to the Jamaica AIDS Support (JAS). We are inviting readers, corporate Jamaica and concerned citizens either to forego your Christmas parties or donate part of your party budget to this worthy cause.
We have set up an account at the National Commercial Bank (NCB) under the name 'Christmas Appeal Jamaica AIDS Support'.
The National Commercial Bank has made the first donation of $50,000. The account number is 351255615 (1-5 Knutsford Boulevard Branch). However, you may make deposits at any branch of NCB across the island.
Let's join in the fight against this deadly disease by supporting the main agency which caters to the needs of those living with HIV/AIDS, the Jamaica AIDS Support. We urge your support.
