Untouchable for Aguilar Memorial
published: Wednesday | December 11, 2002

By Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

FEATURE event at Caymanas Park today is the one mile renewal of the Andrew H.B. Aguilar Memorial Cup for maiden and untried two-year-olds.

The race has attracted a small but insignificant field of six, including the lone debutante COLORADO PAL to be ridden by former champion jockey Wesley Henry for trainer Noel Ennevor.

A bay colt by America's Pal out of Star Romance, COLORADO PAL has looked sufficiently forward at exercise to be competitive in present company and will not be far away at the end.

Still, it is expected that experience will amount for something in an effort to find the winner and in this respect, the two I am expecting to fight out the finish are UNTOUCHABLE and BRINGBACKDIMONEY, the mount of leading jockey Trevor Simpson who with six rides on the card, has a glorious chance of erasing George HoSang's 1974 record of most winners (167) in a season today. He needs only three more winners to accomplish the feat.

Trained by Kevin Mattis, BRINGBACKDIMONEY showed little on his September 27 debut behind REAR ADMIRAL over the round five course, finishing 14 lengths sixth after being outpaced from early. That, however, was a gentle introduction.

Indications are that BRINGBACKTHEMONEY will be coming to run today. The son of Studdish - Sister Que has been fitted with the blinkers for this race and with a mile more to his liking, should come into his own and fight out the finish.

While respecting his chances, preference is for UNTOUCHABLE who proved competitive on November 30 when finishing third to JERICHO in the Abbie Grannum Memorial over 1400 metres.

Although unfancied at 99-1 that day, UNTOUCHABLE, running with the tongue tie, stayed on well from below the distance to finish five lengths adrift of JERICHO in a race of reasonable quality. That was in fact his fourth outing and now heading in the right direction, UNTOUCHABLE under in-form Brian Harding should be good enough to dispose of his five opponents.

Other firm fancies on the card are DEPUTY's REPORT to give outgoing champion jockey Charles Hussey his 1000th career win locally in the first race over the straight five course, YOUNG SUMMER to make all at the expense of WAR EDGE in the 2nd race, CHAPSIE to stave off ARCO IRIS and DEBONAIR in the 4th, PRETTYPRESUMPTUOUS to get the better of SPEED MACHINE and KING'S HIGHWAY in the 5th, ROYAL TIARA to hold OUTSWINGER and CITY LIGHTS at bay in the 7th for two-year-olds, TOO HOT TO TROT to win the 9th at the expense of HERBALIST and RUM CAKE and PROCEEDACCORDINGLY to catch PLEASANT WOOD and STRAIGHT SIX in the 11th.
