Music galore set for Xmas
published: Thursday | December 19, 2002

WESTERN BUREAU:

IF ONE should judge by the vast number of posters on display in the major townships such as Montego Bay, Negril, Savanna-la-Mar, Black River, Falmouth and Lucea, this Christmas season should be chock-full of entertainment for revellers in Western Jamaica.

While 'Genesis 2003', slated for the Montego Bay Community College on December 31, is the only major religious event being advertised, there are numerous stage show and dances, featuring topflight reggae/dancehall acts, aimed at the secular crowd.

In fact, if one should carefully examine the posters, one would notice that all the major reggae stars, inclusive of the likes of Elephant Man, Capleton, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Rayvon, Ken Boothe, Tanya Stephens and George Nooks, are all slated to make one of more appearances in the region.

The excitement for the secular revellers is slated to kick off on Friday, December 20, with a package dubbed Triple X at Orange Hill, in Westmoreland. DJs Fire Lion and Warface will headline that event, which will unfold at Royal Palm Lawn. The hardcopy girls and top sound systems, Black Chiney, King Midas and Danger Zone, will complete the package.

On Saturday, December 21, the action will intensify with two major events, one in Hanover and the other in St. James. In Hanover, a package dubbed 'Cascade Splash' will take place at the Cascade Community Centre, featuring Richie Stephens, Mama Carmen, Copper Cat, DYCR and Joan Dixon. In St. James, the likes of Capleton, Louis Culture, Richie Stephens, Queen Ifrika, Anthony Cruz and Chuck Fender will headline 'Still Blazing' at Bojay Lawn, in Anchovy.

Christmas Eve will see St. Elizabeth taking the spotlight with 'Christmas Extravaganza' at Independence Park, in Black River. That star-studded package will include international star Rayvon and the Big Yard Crew, Beenie Man and the Shocking Vibes Family, Wayne Marshall, Coco Tea and Josey Wales.

On Christmas Day, the much-anticipated dance at Clappers Lawn, in Granville, will take centre stage. Billed as, 'British, American and Jamaican Affair', this event will feature the red-hot Rock Star Disco, with guest selector Sky Juice, of Metromedia fame.

It should be a real heavyweight affair at Pier One, in Montego Bay, on Saturday, December 28, with the much-hyped 'Elephant and Friends' showcase, which will be headlined by Elephant Man, Ninja Man and Wayne Marshall alongside top sound system Adonai with Tony Matterhorn. The following day, December 29, the MXIII Lawn, in Negril, should come alive with Beenie Man and the Shocking Vibes Family in concert.

While New Year's Eve is slated to catch Montego Bay's Christians ringing in the New Year at 'Genesis 2003', it should be all the rage at the Caribbean Beach Park, for the dancehall fans. The seaside venue will feature 'Meet Me At The Party' with Beenie Man, Yellowman, Ken Booth, Tanya Stephens, Singing Melody, Tanto Metro and Devonte, Ce'Cile and Anthony Cruz.
