Disgusting behaviour
published: Thursday | December 19, 2002

THE EDITOR; SIR:

I write regarding discrimination by U.K Immigration. I (as a British-born Jamaican) in the last week have realised just how disgusting the behaviour of UK immigration can be.

Having had someone come for a genuine one-month visit. They were refused entry, locked up, transported daily, like cattle back and forth from detention centre to the airport only to be told there was no flight for them to return on. They were then (having done nothing wrong) put back in detention. The individual was in possession of a letter from their place of employment (proof that they had to return to Jamaica). As well as invitation letter from a well-off sponsor who works in local government.

On appeal a lawyer and local MP supported them but Immigration had no intention of listening. My family and I were treated like criminals. Having had to have our photos and fingerprints taken and checked three times just to visit the individual. So I dread to think how he was treated.

It's a sad state of affairs when a country (in this case Britain) complains that Jamaicans are criminals, drug dealers and gangsters, when the truth is they let in the criminals so as to uphold those beliefs and give wrong impressions to those people who have no contact with Jamaicans and therefore no other basis to gain knowledge and form views.

They seem to be returning plenty of decent, hardworking and law-abiding Jamaican citizens due to the fact that allowing too many good Jamaicans (who could proof them wrong) into the U.K. would make it impossible for them to continue to spread and uphold all their lies and propaganda about Jamaica.

It's not fair due to the fact that if any British person were treated like that abroad there would be a national (maybe even international) uproar. It is this "one rule for Britain and America and another rule for the rest of the world" attitude along with the inequality and prejudice, that U.K immigration needs to address.

I am etc,
