Karl Davis retires from UHWI
published: Thursday | December 19, 2002

KARL DAVIS, retiring chief executive officer of the University Hospital of the West Indies, was showered with many tributes on Monday at an appreciation dinner held in his honour by the hospital.

Many outstanding luminaries in the health sector turned out for the gala affair held at the Mona Visitor's Lodge, University of the West Indies, to celebrate Davis' 45 years of service to the hospital.

John Junor, Minister of Health, who read a tribute on behalf of Prime Minister PJ Patterson, said that Mr. Davis' tenure was characterised by integrity, excellence and intellect.

He said that it was difficult to find people who are capable and committed to service and that the health service delivery system had been bettered by the presence of Karl Davis.

Vice Chancellor Professor Rex Nettleford's message, read by Professor Lloyd Carrington, praised Davis for inspiring a dedicated staff and for always placing importance on the patients' welfare.

The affable hospital executive has overseen many important developments at the UHWI since he was appointed hospital administrator (and later CEO) in 1979. These include the development of the Tony Thwaites Wing, the in Vitro Fertilisation Unit, Centre for HIV/AIDS Research (Chares) and, most recently, the opening of the MRI Unit.

He joined the hospital 1957 as Grade one clerk, quickly moving through the ranks and finally landing the top administrative position in 1979 at the hospital which had become an important training ground for regional doctors. His services were recognised at the national level when he was awarded the Order of Distinction, Officer Class, in 1998.
