Jamaica top England 5-2
published: Thursday | December 19, 2002

JAMAICA TOPPED England 5-2 in the inaugural TARA International Youth Polo tournament held on Sunday last at Knolford Ranch in Bog Walk.

The event proved to be a highly competitive match with both teams fielding players of equal handicap. This levelled the odds ensuring that the team which capitalised most on scoring would emerge victorious.

British High Commissioner, Peter Mathers, threw in the first ball of the four Chukka match which was quickly picked up by Tess Johnson of Rugby School Youth team and converted to the first goal by captain, Nick Warner. Jamaica's Julian Hyde followed suit and racked up one for the home team.

In the second chukka, Ben Hickman of England gave the Brits another goal by converting a 60 yard penalty from a foul by Jamaica giving England their second goal. Hyde, playing an excellent game replied with another to even the score 2-2 by half time.

When the game resumed all players came out with a determined spirit to bring home the magnificent TARA Courier Trophy. Competitive play dominated the third chukka and 11-year-old Jason Wates scored another for Jamaica resulting in a 3-2 lead.

England fought hard to level the score. However, Jamaica's Hyde and Sam Wates each racked a goal to end the fourth chukka score 5-2.

Prior to the match which was a fundraiser for the Mustard Seed community, a number of physically challenged children from Mustard Seed were treated to rides by the visiting rugby school students in an enclosed arena.
